Poetry Book: Animals from Our Backyard

INSIDE: A new class book of poems and prose: Animals from our Backyard.

Over the past few weeks we studied the poetry of Newbery Honor-winning author, Joyce Sidman, and wrote some of our own.

Sidman's books are often topical. For example, Emperor of the Night is about nocturnal creatures and Ubiquitous is about creatures that are survivors, some from the darkness of deep-time (bacteria and lichens) and others because they've figured out how to deal effectively with humans (squirrels!)

She often writes a short informational piece about the same subject as her poetry. They are richly illustrated books that are really fun to read.

This project required us to do some research on an animal that might live in NE Iowa. Our goals for this project were to read and enjoy some poetry and to mesh two genres of writing -- poetry and informational text -- into a unified whole.

Ms. Sand had us performing the poetry as an introduction to readers theater, as might be performed later in middle school.

I am super-pleased with how these turned out. If you have a chance, dip into this book and sample some of the poetry and prose.

You can download the book here if you want it for a scrapbook.

You can read in as an online e-book below.

    1. Totally, Stacey! Such fine poetry. Great to see a range of styles and approaches to the poems and I really enjoyed seeing how each translated the prose-y part and poetry. The mix was terrific.
