English Words We Think We Need to Invent

INSIDE: A short writing project and class e-book.

Just before winter break, we finished a short writing project based on Lost in Translation, a delightful book that contains words that other languages have, but English doesn't.

The words range from this strange unit of time, which only makes sense if your folklore (Malay) contains a story about a man-eating ghost that hangs out in banana trees.

To the sublime ...

We love to read, so we really understood this feeling:

We studied this book, slowed down, and thought about the moments in our lives that had special meaning, but had no word... yet.

Here's how I described the process in the foreword to our class book.

    1. I was totally amazed by what these wonderful learners came up with. It's a little window into what they find fascinating and worthy of notice.

Also, there is something cool about how naming things causes us to notice those things even more, which makes life that much richer, IMHO.
